The paper is concerned with the determination of the magnetic field distribution and the static torque of a switched reluctance motor by means of the finite element method (FEM). In a simplified approach two different models are described, and a microcomputer is used to compute the field of an example motor. The analysis is extended to compute the static torque from the rate of change of magnetic co‐energy with respect to angular displacement; the results are compared with measurements.
