Based on kinetic theory, a model is developed for the in-plane thermal conductivity of nanocrystalline metallic films, combining partially diffuse electron–surface scattering and grain-boundary impedance. The thickness and temperature dependent thermal conductivities are examined. The influence of electron–surface scattering on thermal transport is remarkable, especially for thinner films with a more specular film surface. In addition to electron–surface scattering, grain-boundary scattering also has a major influence on the size effect for thermal conductivity.
