SUMMARY The effect of temperature on phytochrome control of hypocotyl elongation has been investigated using light‐grown seedlings of Sinapis alba. Temperature markedly affects the way in which these seedlings respond to both light quality and light quantity. The strong fluence rate dependence observed at 25 °C is not present at 10 °C and it is suggested that under conditions prevailing in the seedlings’natural environment phytochrome will measure only light quality.
