The intravenous injection of a toxoplasma lysate into rabbits caused death in 6 to 24 hr. The toxic material has properties similar to sarcocystin and Eimeria toxin. Rabbits with chronic toxoplasmosis showed resistance to the lethal effect of the lysate. In the process of preparing hyperimmune sera in rabbits against the toxoplasma hemagglutination antigen (Jacobs and Lunde, 1957) by intravenous injection of the crude toxoplasma lysate, we noticed that these rabbits were dying within 24 hr after inoculation. This observation suggested the possibility of a toxin-like substance in the lysate. Our studies show that this substance is different from toxotoxin (Weinman and Klatchko, 1950) and has properties similar to sarcocystin (see review by von Brand, 1952) and a coccidial toxin described by Burns (1959).
