Appraising the ability of plants to resume satisfactory growth after environmental stress is highly important, yet often the measurements made reflect only mortality or survival. How soon after soil‐drought stress the regrowth potential can be determined was studied in vegetative plants of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Differences in response to stress increased with time, with some not becoming apparent until 4 weeks after termination of stress. Annual ryegrass exhibited stimulation in growth when released from moderate drought stress, a behavior which has been reported in some other species.
