The binary system Fe-Se, in the low concentration range of selenium (up to 25 at% Se), has been studied. Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements confirm the existence of a two-phase composite system. Fe and alpha FeSe, as reported by Troften and Kullerud through X ray studies (1961). The alpha FeSe phase is found to show a quadrupole splitted spectrum with QS=0.23 mm -1 and IS=0.48 mm -1 . A discussion of quadrupole splitting and isomer shift vis-a-vis site symmetry and bonding mechanism has also been reported. Furthermore, Se is found to be insoluble in alpha Fe. A method for separating alpha FeSe from the composite has also been suggested.
