Three methods are proposed for using Skempton's B parameter for determining levels of soil saturation. In the first method, achievement of a specified B value is required before consolidation of the test specimen. In the second, achievement of a specified B value is required after consolidation of the test specimen. In the third method, the B value remains constant when plotted against increasing back pressure. The detrimental effect of performing a B value test on a partially saturated specimen is discussed, along with methods for increasing specimen saturation by flushing with carbon dioxide gas and increasing back pressure. Data are also presented on recommended B criteria as a function of soil type and saturation level, along with typical times required to flush samples.
