The organic carbon content of estuarine seston varies with the tide and along the estuary, and it depends on various factors. It is successfully used to distinguish between seston that remains permanently in suspension and seston that undergoes the tidal sedimentation‐erosion cycle. The latter contains less organic carbon and more minerals which shows that it is weighted by very fine sand grains.
