The first radical ring-opening polymerization of 2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane in the presence of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy radical (TEMPO) has been achieved with di-tert-butyl peroxide as initiator to afford a chain polyester. The observations of small polydispersities of less than 1.5 at high TEMPO concentrations and linear increases in molecular weight with conversion demonstrate some characters of a “living” polymerization process.
