EPR spectra are reported of V2+, Mn2+, and Co2+ in CdI2 and PbI2 single crystals. The g‐values of V2+ are strongly affected by covalent mixing of metal 3d with iodine 5p orbitals. The ligand hyperfine interaction is different for Mn substituted in CdI2 and PbI2, respectively. The change is attributed to a different covalent bonding in the two lattices due to the local distortion of the MnI6 octahedra. The temperature dependence of the zero‐field splitting of Mn2+ is explained in terms of the anisotropy of the nuclear vibrations.
