A simple and inexpensive, yet controllable system for growing small plants in nutrient‐sand cultures was designed and constructed. The system was devised for large volumes of nutrient solution, as well as for accurate control of frequency and duration of wetting cycles necessary for comparing absorption and utilization of NH+4 and NO‐3. The system uses subirrigation to flush and renew the root‐zone nutrient solution and is, thus, especially useful for studies involving small plants, such as grass seedlings, which are easily dislodged by other methods. This method has been used successfully in turfgrass nutrition studies.
