The mutual γ‐irradiation method has been employed to graft methyl methacrylate (MMA) to polypropylene (PP) film in solutions open to the air. It was observed that grafting occurs only when the monomer solutions contain water. This effect of water has been related to a reduction in the oxygen solubility in aqueous solutions. There is some evidence that water affects the kinetics of the graft polymerization.
