HARVARD Medical School has been intimately associated with the Boston City Hospital since its very inception. The original staff of 6 visiting physicians at the time the Hospital was opened in 1864 consisted of graduates of Harvard Medical School1; the first house staff was recruited entirely from among its students,2 and the teaching of undergraduate medical students from Harvard began in the same year.3 In 1914 the Fourth Medical Service was authorized, and it was designated for Harvard teaching during the following year.
