Polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out in the presence of nylon‐6 and a trace amount of copper ion, together with or without carbon tetrachloride in aqueous media. The polymerization was found to proceed with a free radical mechanism, and the rate was largely accelerated with increase of copper ion concentration in the case where carbon tetrachloride was present, while the rate tends to become slower in the absence of carbon tetrachloride. Effect of the temperature as well as the amounts of nylon, monomer and water on the rate of polymerization was also studied. From the results obtained, the initiation mechanism was discussed.
