FePt-functionalized silica particles (see Figure) have been developed with controlled core–shell morphology using the layer-by-layer sequential adsorption technique of polyelectrolytes that favor the further adsorption of one monolayer of FePt nanoparticles. The FePt nanoparticles (synthesized in an organic solvent; inset) can be manipulated in water by exploiting electrostatic interactions. Such a procedure allows the preparation of FePt shells with predictable technological applications.
