The photopolymerization of 4-4'-cyanobiphenylyl 4-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy)benzoate in the liquid crystalline phase was performed both with and without an external electric field, and controlled patterning in a film was achieved. Referring to the thermal behavior of the polarized light transmittance of the polymerized film, the possible coexistance of two different glass transition temperatures for the main chain and the mesogen groups in the polymer is discussed.
