The coordinatively flexible and redox-active complex fragment [Mo(NO)(′S4′)] in 1 makes the stepwise, and in principle catalytic, reduction of NO to NH2OH possible. The two single steps can be clearly distinguished as 2e/2H+ and 1e/1H+ reductions. This reaction may be considered a model for the molecular processes in the reduction of NO to NH2OH within the conversion of NO to NH3 in the nitrogen cycle in nature.
