A faulty discussion by Bopp in 1959 leading to an alleged lower bound for the energy of an N -electron system suggests a very simple approximate formula for the ground state energy. Calculations for the series of ions Be + , C 2 + ,... A 8 + yield results with an accuracy to about 2%.
