A bismuth citrate precursor has been used to yield bismuth trioxide with single‐crystalline one‐dimensional (1D) morphologies in the temperature range of 400°–600°C. The growth process of the nanorods has been investigated using a series of experiments wherein different polymorphs of Bi 2 O 3 are developed along with the nonstoichiometric bismuth oxides. The nonstoichiometric oxides are generated in situ and facilitate the formation of metastable polymorphs and 1D nanostructures of Bi 2 O 3 .
