The product of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae RAD52 gene is implicated in DNA double-strand-break recombinational repair. Yeast strains lacking a functional RAD52 gene are extremely X-ray sensitive and deficient in mitotic and meiotic recombination. To identify RAD52 homologues exprsesed in higher eukaryotes, we have designed two degenerate polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers corresponding to highly conserved sequences. The gene is evolutionarily conserved and comparative structure-function relationships may shed some light on the biology of this central recombinational protein. 13 refs., 3 figs.
