CaF2 single crystals doped with typical rare earth ions (RE = Gd, Tb) are compared with CaF2: Lu with regard to thermally stimulated effects. Thermoluminescence and thermal decay of absorbing centres after X-ray excitation have been investigated. The results show that the properties of Lu are quite different from typical rare earth dopants. Therefore lutetium doped crystals cannot be discussed in the consistent model, valid for rare earth doped crystals.
