The problems in separating liquid-liquid dispersions increase the smaller the drop diameter becomes. In that situation fibre-bed settlers can be used, and this paper reports on experiments investigating the separation performance of fibre-bed settlers in relation to the relevant influencing parameters. Heuristic rules, derived from the experimental results, are introduced which allow the safe construction of a fibre-bed settler at a relatively low cost.
