The novel C13-glucoside β-ionyl-β-D-glucopyranoside 2a was identified in purple passionfruit as a genuine precursor of isomeric megastigma-4,6,8-trienes 1a-d. The identification was verified by comparison of HRGC and HRGC-MS data of the peracetylated natural product with those of an authentic specimen synthesized by a modified Königs-Knorr procedure.
