SummaryThe production of circulating interferon in x-irradiated (1000 R, whole-body) C3H/He mice was studied. In the irradiated animals, the amounts of interferon released into the circulation after injection of either Newcastle Disease virus or Sindbis virus were reduced to about 20 per cent of control values. The inhibitory effect of the x-irradiation appeared during the first 24 hours after irradiation, when Sindbis virus was used as an inducer of interferon formation; with Newcastle disease virus as inducer, interferon levels remained normal up to 48 hours after irradiation. This suggests that a different cell population is involved for each of these two viruses.
