Genetic studies were undertaken to determine whether changes In chromosome structure differentiate the wild soybean (Glycine soja Sieb. & Zucc.) from the cultivated soybean {G. max L. Merrill). Chromosome structure In currently grown cuWvare was regarded as the standard chromosome structure. A total of 26 accessions from The People's Republic of China and 30 accessions from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was evaluated. Twenty-one accessions from China and 25 accessions from the Soviet Union contain chromosome Interchanges. Two accessions from the Soviet Union were mixtures of chromosome-structure types. Intercrosses of homozygous Interchange accessions from the two countries Indicated that the same chromosomes were Involved in the Interchange. Most likely, all 46 of the accessions have the identical Interchange. Several of he accessions with noninterchange chromosome structure had morphological and physiological characteristics and Isoenzyme patterns that indicated they might be the result of Introgresslon between various genotypes. No chromosome Inversions were observed In the 56 accessions.
