Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/ZrO2 nanocomposites were successfully prepared by hydrothermal treatment of MWNTs in ZrOCl2?8H2O aqueous solution at 150??C, by which stronger bonds of Zr?O?C are formed between the MWNTs and ZrO2. The composites were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, and IR analysis. It was found that ZrO2 nanoparticles homogeneously distributed on the sidewall of the MWNTs. By adjusting the experimental parameters, ZrO2 /MWNT composites with ZrO2 existing in a different phase were obtained. The composites could find potential applications as catalysts, fuel cells, and ideal reinforcements in other composites.
