The synthesis and characterization of new amphiphilic polysilanes containing chiral pendant ammonium groups are described. Chloromethylation of polyhexylphenylsilane (PHPS) was carried out to give p-chloromethylated PHPS (1). 1 was treated with optically active N,N-dimethyl-α-methylbenzylamine to give an amphiphilic polysilane. The polymer prepared was soluble in water, ethanol and acetonitrile. The circular dichromic spectrum of the polymer in ethanol showed that the the polymer had a screw-sense main chain.
