Doping with iodine strongly enhanced the electrical conduction in polyethylene (PE). The current characteristics of doped PE and two-layer (doped PE/undoped PE) specimens revealed that electron injection from the cathode played an important role in the current enhancement of doped PE. The X-ray induced TSC also gave evidence of localised state originating from iodine dopants. Therefore it was concluded that iodine enhanced the conduction in PE in the high-field region mainly through electron injection via its localised states.
