A basis is presented for the calculation of the terminal velocities, V, of thirteen types of precipitation element over a wide range of size and air density, ρ. It is found that changes in drag coefficient allowed for in the calculations are unimportant and that for the purpose of deducing rainfall rates from aircraft observations of precipitation particles they may be ignored; thus for particles of a given size and type.
