The accessibility of cellulose samples with different supermolecular structure during deuteration has been studied by NMR. It has been established that the content of accessible regions is higher than the content of amorphous regions determined by the X‐ray method. A modified crystalline–amorphous model of cellulose structure is proposed to explain this result. According to this model, thin surface layers of crystallites are less ordered and are accessible during the deuterium exchange. The quantitative ratio between the accessibility and the crystallinity of cellulose has been established.
