Phthalocyanine aluminum, gallium and chromium fluorides were prepared and doped with iodine to give (PcMFI) compositions, where x = 0.012-3.4 (M=A1), 0.048-2.1 (M = Ga) and 0.12-3.3 (M = Cr). Thermogravimetric analysis proved useful for iodine analysis as complete loss of I” occurs below 250° C, leaving a PcMF residue. Raman and infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the iodine-doped PcMF materials. Raman spectra (u = 514.5 nm) of (PcMFI) showed scattering attributable to I3- (106-108x cmn-1) and I5- (164-168 cm−1), with the relative proportions of these bands being a function of M and sample thermal history. Iodine doping results ingincreases in conductivity by factors, as high as 109, with the highest conductivity (5 ohm−1 cm−1) being observed for (PcA1FI3.4)n. derived from sublimed (PcAlF)n. An apparent activation energy for conduction of 0.17 eV was measured for (PcAlFI3.4). The crystal and molecular structure of PcGaFnias been determined and will be discussed in relation to the conductivity of the doped material.
