A survey is described in which it was established that in the period June 1975-June 1976 in the clinical catchment area of North Staffordshire an unexpected increase in the incidence of pityriasis lichenoides varioliformis acuta (PLVA) occurred; and that the first case out of 10 investigated had significantly elevated complement fixing antibody litres to Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). Complement fixing antibodies to EBV were looked for in the remaining 9 cases of PLVA and in a group of 11 patients suffering from ‘exanthematic’ dermatoses which may be provoked by an infective agent, and who presented in the same 12-month period. Our preliminary results have shown that EBV antibodies are elevated in a proportion of patients exhibiting the PLVA reaction and other ‘exanthematic’ skin reactions; which could indicate that EBV infection is occasionally causally related to these reactions.
