Studies on the Carcinogenicity of Gasoline ExhaustVommunity air pollution has been regarded as a factor which, alone or combined with tobacco smoke might contribute to lung cancer. 1 These considerations led our group at the Sloan-Kettering Institute to conduct, in co-operation with the General Motors Corporation, Research Laboratories, investigations on air pollution carcinogenesis. This report presents experimental data on gasoline engine exhaust. It is not intended to prove or disprove carcinogenicity of gasoline engine exhaust or air pollution.Such evidence can come only from epidemiological studies. 1 The objectives of these investigations are to find an understanding for air pollution carcinogenesis in the experimental setting, and to establish methods of reducing the emission of carcinogens into the environment.
