A trial-potential approach, which avoids the potential pitfalls of a replica method, is introduced to understand the essential mechanism that leads to the localization of randomly sequenced polymers at an interface. Localization of polymers with an evenly distributed randomness is shown to always occur, and the localization transition of polymers with an unevenly distributed randomness is identified as a second order phase transition. The results agree with numerical simulation data and are compared with previous theories.
