The copepod Epischura nevadensis selectively preys on zooplankton communities in a way that reduces the abundance of the cladoceran Bosmina longirostris and favors larger‐bodied species. Bosmina responds to this predation by behavioral and morphological adjustments that frustrate the searching and handling strategies of the predatory copepods; this response implies considerable evolution between the two antagonists. Predation by copepods and other freshwater invertebrates seems an important factor in determining not only the size composition of lake communities, but the shape in some species.
