Key result
This review summarizes the current status of carotid artery stenting compared to carotid endarterectomy, highlighting acute outcomes, long-term results, and restenosis rates.
Why the study?
Does carotid artery stenting improve acute and long-term outcomes compared to carotid endarterectomy in patients requiring carotid revascularization?
Does carotid artery stenting improve acute and long-term outcomes compared to carotid endarterectomy in patients requiring carotid revascularization?
This review summarizes the acute and long-term outcomes, as well as restenosis rates, of carotid artery stenting compared to carotid endarterectomy.
No practice change from this Level 5 review; leaves open optimal CAS versus CEA strategy.
In the past several years, carotid angioplasty as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy has developed as an evolving technology performed routinely in many centres worldwide. In this article we review the current status of the results of carotid artery stenting based on observational series and randomised trials. We highlight the acute outcome, the long-term results and the occurrence of restenosis of the endovascular therapy and present a brief description of the latest stenting studies compared to randomized surgery trials.

Rabe et al. (2004) conducted a review in Carotid artery disease. Carotid artery stenting vs. Carotid endarterectomy was evaluated on Acute outcome, long-term results, and occurrence of restenosis. This review summarizes the current status of carotid artery stenting compared to carotid endarterectomy, highlighting acute outcomes, long-term results, and restenosis rates.
