Endodermis and pericycle cell lengths were measured in intact and decapitated adventitious roots of Allium cepa L. Decapitation had no effect on cell length in mature portions of the root, although it affected more immature cells, impeding normal elongation. Cell length shows a characteristic pattern in different zones of the adventitious root: cells in the medial region were more markedly elongated. The number of lateral root primordia was also determined in different zones of the adventitious root. The possible relationship between lateral root distribution pattern and cell length in the endodermis and pericycle is discussed.
