Describes an experiment which allows the study to be made of the relaxation of metastable atoms with non-thermal equilibrium velocities. This relaxation is mainly due to elastic collisions. The velocity perturbation is created by a short and intense layer pulse. The evolution of the perturbation is studied by absorption of delayed probe pulses provided by an optical delay line. The 5 1 D 2 to 6 1 P 1 transition of barium I is studied at 1.5 mu m. Pressure conditions are such that elastic collisions are mainly due to atoms of a carrier gas mixed with the barium vapour. Results obtained with krypton and xenon are presented. The specific time constant for the velocity relaxation is described in the frame of the strong collision model.
