In this study, the preparation of pH sensitive hydrogels at a very mild temperature of +4°C, was described. Lightly cross-linked hydroxyethylmethacrylate-dimethylaminoethylmetha-crylate (HE-MA-co-DMAEM) copolymer gels were produced by a copolymerization initiated by potassium persulfate in an aqueous medium. The amine containing comonomer (i.e., DMAEM) acted as an accelerator in the copolymerization reac-tion. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the gel matrix comprised of a highly porous interior along with a skin layer around it. The effects of DMAEM concentration and the total monomer/water ratio on the equilibrium swelling behavior of the gels were examined. The gels produced with different DMAEM contents exhibited a highly pH dependent equilibrium swelling behavior. The extent of transition from the shrunken state to the swollen state was strongly related to the DMAEM content of the gel matrix. The effective diffusion coefficient of water was also determined by applying unsteady state diffusion model on the dynamic swelling and shrinking behaviors of the produced gels.
