Electrochemical characterization reveals independent redox states in xylylene-bridged diamino-1,3,5-triazines, indicating negligible electronic coupling between bridged units.
The N-benzylpyridinium-substituted diamino-1,3,5-triazine (Bz-TZN) and its geometrically separated units on a xylene core (O-, M-, P-TZN) were synthesized. The cyclic voltammetry of these compounds shows two redox states, irrespective of the number and location on the xylene core. These compounds were characterized by 1H, 13C NMR, HRMS, CV, chronoamperometry, staircase voltammetry, and spectroelectrochemistry, which revealed that two units on a xylene core have negligible interaction with each other and mostly retain their independent redox states.
