Systematic review finds limited instruction on animal-based indicators in poultry depopulation materials, highlighting crucial gaps in animal welfare verification.
This document is a revision and assessment of the existing training courses and materials about depopulation and killing of poultry on farm. EURCAW‑Poultry‑SFA collected national training materials from 2010–2026. In addition, related Better Training for Safer Food materials were also collected and assessed. Ten Member States replied to the email, but five reported that they had no relevant materials to share. The national materials received (12) were mostly guidelines, factsheets, and handbooks, rather than training courses. Overall, the reviewed documents describe the methods commonly used for killing and depopulation, but they provide limited information on animal‑based indicators (ABIs) for assessing consciousness and confirming death.
