Diastereomeric and enantiomeric excesses of greater than 95 % were achieved in the preparation of the cyclopentanecarboxylate 3 by asymmetric MIRC (Michael initiated ring closure) reactions of the hydrazones 1 with the unsaturated brominated ester 2. The de and ee values were determined by gas chromatography and in NMR experiments. RMe, nBu, iBu, Ph, p-BrC6H4.
