Odours are generally regarded as a nuissance. The paper examines the definition of an odour, and touches briefly on legislation, the measurement of odours, and the meaning of Odour Numbers and Odour Emission Rates. Methods of abatement are then described, including prevention, biosystems, activated carbon, wet scrubbing and thermal oxidation. The advantages and disadvantages of the various methods are compared, and the paper concludes with a table indicating the relative capital and operating costs for the systems described.
