In the course of polycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride and ethylene glycol with subsequent baking, a cyclotetramer (M4) was isolated as a by‐product besides poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and was identified by means of DSC, IR, GC‐MS and elemental analysis. The effects of this cyclotetramer M4 on the crystallization and on the morphological behavior of PET in the absence of residual catalyst were studied. It was found that M4 is soluble in the polymer melt. Thus, it only serves as a diluent and does not show any nucleation effect on the crystallization of PET.
