A set of hypersonic measurements of mixtures of t-butanol-water by the method of Brillouin scattering has been completed in the temperature range 2°–45°C. The hypersonic velocity isotherms as a function of alcohol concentration exhibit a common crossover point. This occurs at a mole fraction of alcohol x2=0.03 at 6 GHz, and at x2=0.05 at 3 GHz. Considerable dispersion is observed between ultrasonic and hypersonic data. Also dispersion is observable in the hypersonic region, and increases with decreasing temperature. An attempt to explain the observed dispersion by the two-state theory of Schneider is unsuccessful.
