A broadband right hand circularly polarized antenna based on a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) structure is proposed and experimentally investigated. A novel feeding transition from stripline to SIW introduces the proximity coupling method in SIW structure for meliorating the operating bandwidth. Multiple circularly polarized modes are generated to improve the axial ratio (AR) bandwidth without sacrificing the self‐consistent electrical shielding property. As a result, it is experimentally proved that an impedance bandwidth of 25.6% and an AR bandwidth of 12% have been obtained in X‐band.
