A modified four-ball lubricant-testing machine in which each of the three fixed balls makes its own wear track on the rotating ball is described and discussed. The effect of this modification on the sliding contact surfaces is considered. The geometry of the system may be chosen so as to either minimize or maximize the differences among the three contacts in sliding velocity, normal load and apparent contact area.
