The use of ab initio molecular orbital calculations in the understanding of the low energy photoelectron spectra of transition metal complexes is discussed. The role of orbital relaxation and correlation effects are illustrated by considering carbonyl and arelie complexes, and complexes having chromium and molybdenum mul-tiple bonds, respectively.
