The singlet (g ≈ 2) ESR spectrum is reported for partially crystalline polymer extracts obtained from partially polymerized samples of the bis (p-toluene sulphonate) ester of 2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol. This is assigned to centres at conformational defects of the polymer chain. The major changes observed on thermal cycling are interpreted in terms of the rearrangement of chains to a more distorted but more stable conformation. Less marked reversible changes reflect the response of the chain defects to thermally induced chain motion. An additional narrow line absorption is observed with the samples under vacuum, possible causes of this paramagnetic species are discussed.
