The validity of theories of fiber failure that depend on the rapid propagation of Griffith-type flaws is examined, as is the validity of the assumptions on which the theories are based. Some experimental results indicate a reasonable qualitative dependence of strength on the surface energy of fracture, in agreement with the theories, but other experiments seeking evidence of crack growth under stress reveal quantitative inconsistencies. The conclusions arc that crack- propagation theories as currently formulated need reexamination.
